What Is Full Mouth Reconstruction?
Full mouth reconstruction is a process whereby your dentist will remove any old dental work you have had done, such as fillings, veneers, crowns, etc. and replace them with new dental work that will improve your overall bite as well as your overall oral health. There are a number of approaches and treatment options we use to ensure a beautiful result following a full mouth reconstruction, including dental implants, gum therapy, braces, and more.

Gum Therapy: To prepare you for any invasive or non-invasive dental treatment, it is not uncommon for patients to undergo a series of gum therapy treatments. This process involves scaling of teeth, which is done to remove any infections or bacteria from the area. This process can take a couple few visits to complete, but it is may be a necessary step in the full mouth reconstruction process.

Bone Grafting: Your dentist will perform a dental bone graft if your tooth or teeth have been missing for an extended period of time, or there is insufficient bone remaining to support an implant. When an individual allows for a missing tooth to remain for a long enough time, there is greater risk for the jawbone to begin deteriorating. If the replacement takes place early enough, it may be possible to replace the bone tissue that has been lost with a dental bone graft, but this is never guaranteed. If your dentist determines that your best course of action is to have a dental bone graft, they will use bone or synthetic material to encourage growth of bone tissue in the area or areas where the loss has occurred. Many patients prefer the use of synthetic materials, however, the use of an actual bone (either human or animal) is also an option. If your preference is to use an actual bone, the donated bone will go through an extensive disinfectant process to prepare it for placement.

Root Canals: Although they have a bad reputation, root canals are often the easiest way to save your tooth from having to be removed. Your dentist will remove the injured pulp. Once this is completed, they will disinfect the system, and after the inside of the tooth has been cleaned and filled, a filling or crown will be placed to act as a seal and also to prevent further infection.

Full Mouth Aftercare
Following your full mouth reconstruction procedures, it will take some time for you to adjust to the feel of your new bite. Generally, you will grow accustomed to the new feel after several days, but if you continue to experience issues, please contact our staff.
Depending on the extent of the work you have done, it is not uncommon to feel sensitivity to hot or cold beverages. It may also take a few days for your gums and teeth to heal and lose their sensitivity. If necessary, you may look into mild pain medication to help relieve any initial discomfort you are feeling. Once you have fully recovered from your surgery, it will likely not be necessary to make any dramatic changes to your diet and or eating habits, though it is important to continue practicing good dental hygienic practices by brushing and flossing at least twice daily and continue to schedule your dentist appointments every six months.

As is the case with most dental procedures, what and how much of your procedure will be covered will ultimately be determined by what type of procedure or procedures you need to have performed and your specific insurance plan. Still, many insurance plans cover some full mouth reconstruction procedures, although they may not cover the entire cost.
