Porcelain Veneers

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Mis-shapened, crooked, stained, and chipped teeth? Wanting a dramatic and immediate impact on your smile? Composite veneers may be the exact solution you’re looking for.

Porcelain veneers are razor thin, incredibly strong, custom made tooth colored shells designed to make your most ideal smile. When we notice a smile, what we are really seeing is the harmonious relationship of our teeth with lips, facial structures and gum line.

Whether this is the dental home you stay with for a lifetime, or the one you get to visit on occasion, we want to give you an experience every time you’ll be able to tell others about.

Every situation is unique and your care should always be personalized. If you have specific questions about whether you might be a good candidate for porcelain veneers, please feel free to contact our wonderful staff at Rivers Bend.

Porcelain Veneer Procedure Expectations

To get porcelain veneer, there are usually a few dental appointments. Your first appointment is the consultation, a digital 3D scan of your teeth is created, digital x-rays and photographs are taken of your teeth and mouth. This is a great time to bring up any special requests you have, show old photos of your youthful smile you’d like to emulate and to see what the final product will look like. Though, composite veneers cost is a bit on the higher side, it is outweighed by their long term benefits.

Once a plan is in place and finalized with you, a preparation appointment is set. Dr. Wimmergren will prepare your teeth by creating enough space for the thin porcelain that is layered on top of the tooth. Generally a painless process, anesthesia and nitrous gas is always offered to keep you comfortable during the procedure.

When completed with the preparation, a digital impression is taken with the 3D scanner and shade chosen for your ideal tooth color. After this, the veneers are created and set in a lab before they come back to Rivers Bend for your bonding appointment.

At the final bonding appointment, the veneers will be tried in at first to confirm the shape, seating and color are to your liking. With your approval, the teeth are readied for their final placement. The teeth are cleaned up, polished and etched. A special bonding cement is lined on the inside of the veneer and finally cured into its final position by the special UV light.

As soon as the last veneer is cured and cleaned up, it’s now time for you to rock the world with your new custom made smile!

Choosing Between Porcelain Veneers And Dental Crowns

It is important to know the difference between porcelain composite veneers and dental crowns when choosing between the two. So which option is right for you?

  • Porcelain Veneers are cosmetic in nature. They improve the outward appearance of shape, size and look of the tooth and smile. Utilize porcelain veneers when you want to be ultra conservative and not take away so much tooth structure.
  • Dental Crowns are functional and cosmetic in nature. They help protect the entire chewing surface of the tooth while improving the cosmetic looks of the tooth. Utilize dental crowns when you need to protect the underlying tooth because of past decay, large fillings or cracks.

It’s super important for you to take the time to talk with your dentist about the different options you may have. Treatment plans vary from person to person, and your situation is unique, you should always be treated with a personal touch to meet your specific dental needs.

Caring For Your Veneers

The 24 hours after your veneer procedure is a critical time in caring for your new veneers. During this critical time, avoid chewing on hard substances as the cement is setting to it’s final cure. After the 24 hour period, there are no specific restrictions you have to follow. Use your new veneers like you would use natural teeth. That also means brush and floss them like natural teeth, twice a day daily. Follow up with your regular scheduled exams and hygiene appointments as well to catch any issues early.

Associated Costs

Every situation and specific insurance plan is unique and different. And with most dental procedures, what and how much a procedure will be covered is ultimately determined by your specific policy and plan. Porcelain veneers are covered by most dental insurance plans, just make sure with your policy what your maximums are and if you may reach your limit, the rest would be an out of pocket expense. If you do not currently have dental insurance coverage or have questions about payment options, always feel free to contact our knowledgeable staff. They are always happy to discuss possible options with you. As such, composite veneers cost can always be recovered by a dental insurance plan.
